Wonderful Windsor!

Updated: May 28

After a long and nearly sleepless night of travel, we landed at London’s Heathrow and made our way to our hotel, the Fairmont Windsor Park. Since we are only here for two days, we chose to stay close to the airport rather than make our way into the city center.

So why are we only in London for two days? When searching airfares, we found that we could save thousands (no, that’s not a typo) if we flew roundtrip to London from Dallas rather than to Rome – even when you factor in our roundtrip European “commuter” flights from London to Italy. So we are book-ending our trip with two visits to jolly old England! Travel tip: always look at alternative cities when comparing airfares. We once rented a car one-way and drove to Houston for our flight to Amsterdam and saved $1,200 per person!

After settling into our beautiful hotel in the country and on the outskirts of town, we made the huge mistake of lying down on the bed. We proceeded to break the cardinal rule of international travel day-one and took a 2-hour nap!

We ventured off property for dinner to the Green Oak – a lovely pub about 15 minutes from our hotel, with reviews that claimed the best Sunday roast around. We were not disappointed – the food and atmosphere were outstanding! To top it off, we actually saw a small dog sitting in a high chair with Sherpa lining…inside the pub! And we met Sir Arthur Longlegs (a very friendly dachshund/chihuahua mix) while sitting at the bar prior to dinner. Clearly this is a pet-friendly establishment!

After a much-need night’s rest, we started off our Monday by heading into town. We enjoyed walking the store-lines streets around Windsor Royal Station, and then headed into Windsor Castle.

At nearly 1,000 years old, it’s the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. William the Conquerer built the castle, and it was one of nine defensive castles built in a ring around London. Ten of the 39 British monarchs are buried at Windsor, including Henry VIII and the favorite of his six wives, Jane Seymour. Queen Elizabeth II was also laid to rest there.

Unfortunately, there is no changing of the guard at Windsor on Mondays, so we missed seeing this. And no photos are allowed inside the castle (although I may have snuck one or two when no one was looking).

Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, a 1:12 (1 inch = 1 foot) scale miniature house of exceptional architecture is located in Windsor and is 100 years old. The house at one time had plumbing with actual running water, and still displays electric lighting, as well as hundreds of pieces of miniature art, household items, furniture, and even a wine cellar containing bottles filled with actual wine!

Windsor wasn’t just a favorite among the British royals; it is rumored that Hitler had planned to take up residence at Windor had he successfully invaded the UK. Another reason to thank Churchill for his WWII actions!

The Long Walk, a picturesque, tree-lined avenue leading up to the castle is nearly three miles long. After our stroll along the walk, we caught an Uber back to our hotel in time for our late afternoon hot stone massage!

We relaxed post-massage and then enjoyed a casual dinner and drinks in the hotel bar. Tomorrow, we’re up early for our flight to Milan.

Cheerio!
